Understanding Safe RV Towing
Towing a camper trailer is different from daily driving. Here are the core specifications you must know to ensure a safe, sway-free highway trip.
The 80% Safe Towing Rule
Never tow at 100% of your vehicle's manufacturer-rated towing capacity. Wind resistance, cargo, passengers, water tanks, and steep mountain passes add massive stress to your engine and brakes. Keeping your trailer weight under 80% of your maximum capacity provides a vital safety buffer.
Tongue Weight (Hitch Weight)
Tongue weight is the downward force exerted by the trailer coupler onto the tow vehicle's hitch ball. It should represent 10% to 15% of the total loaded trailer weight. Too little tongue weight causes severe trailer sway (fishtailing); too much tongue weight overloads your rear suspension.
Dry Weight vs. GVWR
Dry weight (UVW) is the weight of the camper empty from the factory without water, propane, or personal gear. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) is the absolute maximum weight the trailer can safely weigh loaded. Always calculate your towing margins based on loaded weights, not empty dry weights.
Trailer Brake Controllers
Any trailer weighing over 3,000 lbs requires its own electric brakes. To operate them, your tow vehicle must be equipped with a Brake Controller (either built-in from the factory or an aftermarket plug-in option) to synchronize the trailer brakes with your foot pedal.
